To celebrate National Volunteers’ Week, Rotary is thanking all of its members and volunteers across the length and breadth of Great Britain and Ireland for their continued commitment and dedication to voluntary service.

Tens of thousands of Rotary members across a network of over 1,750 clubs help to improve the lives of others every year by giving their time and talents to a variety of causes.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland President Peter Davey says volunteering “makes a huge difference to those we serve, whether in our own local communities or overseas” and he never fails to be amazed by the work which Rotary members complete.

Peter continued: “Surveys recently revealed that Rotarians had helped 75,000 young people to improve their prospects through mentoring, interview training and development of their leadership skills. This winter also saw many parts of Great Britain and Ireland devastated by flooding, and I am enormously proud of the work that Rotarians did in those communities helping people to restore their homes or businesses. Elsewhere we collected money to help too. The total value of all this help has been estimated at over £1 million.”

“We must understand that volunteers use their time and skills to make things better for people. Without their help, so many people would not get the help that they need.”

Whether it’s helping young people showcase their talents at Rotary youth competitions, planting five million crocus bulbs to raise awareness for the battle to eliminate the world of polio, or supporting communities devastated by natural disasters, there are very few challenges which Rotarians aren’t keen to tackle.
