While most of us were tucking into our Turkey and Christmas Pudding Nick Corke, governor of the East Anglia Rotary district, decided to spend Christmas day doing something a little bit different…

Nick joined swimmers who took the plunge and went for a dip in the ice cold North Sea as part of the annual charity swim organised by Southwold and District Rotary Club. Southwold and District has been holding the event since 2012, after its initial set up some years before by the landlord of local pub The Red Lion in Southwold. This year, over 100 people from the local area went for a Christmas dip to raise money for a number of local charities in addition to The Royal National Lifeboat Institution who provide safety cover for the event each year.

Nick, along with training partner and Assistant Governor Pat Webb, took part in the swim to raise money for the End Polio Now campaign, which continues to be a key priority for Rotary. Nick explains: “I was challenged to take part in the swim by Keith Rolfe, President of Southwold and District Rotary Club and I immediately turned to Pat and said ‘I will if you will!’

“It was great to get involved in a much loved event that is held within my district. The day was a lot of fun, with many people really getting into the festive spirit in fancy dress. We also managed to raise just over £2,500 for End Polio Now by taking part, which is hopefully a helpful boost for a campaign so close to the heart of Rotary.”

Alan Hardwick, secretary of Southwold and District comments: “It was great to have Nick and Pat joining in the festivities of the swim and raising such a great total. Along with the money they raised for End Polio Now, we are also on course to raise over £2,000 for local charities, which is a fantastic achievement.

“Despite the cold, the event was a great success…the participants certainly earned their Christmas dinner this year!”
