The Rotary Club of Marlow says it is well on the way to meeting its target of £40,000 to help Ebola sufferers, thanks to the generosity of local residents and other Rotary clubs.

The Rotarians took to the streets following an appeal which was started by Marlow Rotary Club’s Brian Jonson and Jim Clarke last month. With over £15,000 already generated from donations across the area, organisers are confident they now have the cash to qualify for a Rotary International grant.

Brian Jonson said: “I am very pleased with our efforts so far. We have had a lot of good feedback with people saying that it was about time somebody did something. I was on the bridge in Marlow for about two and a half hours and everyone was really positive about what we are doing.

“Now that we are getting closer to the amount we need we are corresponding with Rotary in the States and are really hopeful that a grant will be approved.”

Brian Jonson added that he intends to talk to Rotary International at the highest level about the possibility of launching the campaign into a sustainable nationwide Ebola appeal.

Marlow Rotary Club held a public forum at Marlow’s United Reformed Church in September at which David Frankfort, a Rotarian from Monrovia updated colleagues about the situation on the ground and launched an international campaign to raise $100,000 to help with the crisis.

Through links with Rotarians in Monrovia, the Marlow Rotarians are able to get supplies to the worst affected areas as well as transferring funds direct to the Rotary Club of Monrovia.

Rotary clubs around the Marlow area including High Wycombe, Bourne End and Cookham, have also added to the fund and street collections as far away as Oxfordshire have got behind the campaign. Other clubs offering support include Marlow Thames, Maidenhead Thames, Reading Maiden Erlegh, Henley Bridge, Misbourne Matins and Didcot.
