The Rotary Club of Horsham has brought a safari to the streets of the market town with the Elephantastic project, which launched on Sunday with RIBI’s President Elect Eve Conway and Born Free’s President Will Travers providing the launch speeches.

The project involves 185 plain model elephants, which have been sold to over 130 companies who have each added their unique design. Three safari trails of the elephants will now be available to follow, two in Horsham town centre, and one in the surrounding countryside, from Sunday 26th July through to Monday 31st August. There are over 100 fantastic prizes on offer to successful trail finders with the star prize being a family trip to an elephant orphanage in Kenya.

65 charities and community groups, chosen by the organisations who purchased the elephants, are set to benefit from the proceeds of the project, and through the sales of the elephants via online bids and, for the most valuable elephants, an auction which is lined up for the autumn. The event’s partner charity is Born Free an organization, which works to encourage compassionate conservation and animal welfare, who will receive 25% of all proceeds plus the revenues from the sale of the elephants that they own, most of which have been created by celebs including Amanda Holden , Vic Reeves and also internationally famed wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering . The funds will help build an elephant sanctuary in Tuscany, the first in Europe, to care for vulnerable elephants rescued from captivity in Europe.

Many elephant owners have chosen to carry out in-house designs or use local schools to decorate their wonderful creatures, whilst others have recruited a professional artist, and many elephants have received celebrity endorsements.

But it’s not just the elephants taking the town by storm this summer, locals and visitors to Horsham will be able to get their hands on a range of T-shirts, wrist bands and cuddly toys, brandishing the unique and tasteful Elephantastic design, created by local marketing agency, PMW Communications.

John Le Rossignol, Horsham Rotarian, commented: “There has been a real buzz in the town since the unveiling of the elephants on Sunday. The level of interest and support in the project has astounded us and now we are so excited to have finally started the celebrations. For those keen to know what to expect, like us on Facebook to see newly designed elephants going up each day.”
