The University of Bradford is welcoming international peace experts to the Bill Huntley Memorial Seminar on 25 October. The event will showcase the excellent work achieved by Rotary Peace Fellows who study at the University’s peace centre. Attendees will be discussing how to promote world peace, create goodwill and reduce conflict. This year’s speakers are Madeleine Rees and Beatrice Botomani.

Madeleine Rees is a member of the advisory board for the Secretary General of the UN and the expert advisory group for the UK initiative on the prevention of sexual violence in armed conflict. She was awarded the OBE in 2014 for her work in human rights, particularly women’s rights, international peace and security and was also awarded the Dean’s Award for Social Justice by Cuny Law school in New York.

Beatrice Botomani fled with her two children to the UK from Malawi in 2004 and was voted Yorkshire Refugee of the Year in recognition of her work to highlight the rights of women and child refugees in detention. She has worked as a volunteer for the Bradford Women’s Forum, a Trustee of Forster Community College and with BCB Community Radio. Beatrice is now Secretary of Bradford Refugee Forum.

Chris Bown of the Rotary Peace Centre in Bradford said: “The annual Bill Huntley Memorial seminar is a celebration of our peace fellows who dedicate their lives to conflict resolution. We aim to make sure that our graduates have the skills to influence key decision makers and understand the issues and cultural conflicts involved.”

The event is open to anyone. To book a place please go to the Rotary Peace Centre in Bradford website.
