Friday October 18 is Purple Clothes Day and Rotarians throughout Great Britain and Ireland will be wearing purple clothes and organising Purple Clothes Days in hundreds of schools and work places. The aim of Purple Clothes Day is to raise funds for the Rotary International charity, End Polio Now in the run up to World Polio Day on October 24.

The Rotary Club of Leicester is just one of the clubs organising Purple Clothes Days in local schools. Pupils are being encouraged to make a donation of £1 to End Polio Now in return for coming to school in non-uniform and wearing a purple item.

Similarly, in work places, employees can come to work in casual clothes and wearing a purple item in return for a donation. The concept is based on the purple dye that health workers in polio affected countries place on children’s fingers to show they have received the polio vaccine.

Tony Jarvis, President of the Rotary Club of Leicester said: “We are hoping that as many schools and workplaces as possible will get involved. There has never been a better time to donate to End Polio Now as this year the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match fund the money raised by 2:1.”

Around the world, there are a total of 198 Rotary clubs holding fundraising events for Purple Clothes Day.
