Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has been honoured with a Rotary International Peace Award.

The Welsh music and culture festival, which was established in the wake of World War II, has been recognised by Rotary for its promotion of peace and understanding through the arts as it celebrates its 70th anniversary.

The festival traditionally opens each year with a spoken word performance delivered by local children from Llangollen along the themes of harmony and goodwill, which are some of the key areas where Rotary and its members focus their time and activities.

Molly Yould, Rotary Governor for the region has been a keen supporter of the festival, having manned a Rotary tent at the festival for 15 years. She was on hand with Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland President Eve Conway to present the award to Eisteddfod’s Chairman, Dr Rhys Davies at one of their cultural celebrations.

Dr Davies commented: “Rotary International is a truly wonderful organisation and the partnership between the Eisteddfod and Rotary is the perfect match because we have in common the work we do to promote world peace and understanding.

“I felt proud and very privileged to accept the award on behalf of the Eisteddfod and I’m sure our partnership will go from strength to the strength in future years.”

Rotary’s commitment to peace and conflict resolution across the world includes partnerships with disaster aid charities such as Shelterbox, as well as providing scholarship programmes to train the next generation of peacemakers.
