The Rotary Club Of Otley Chevin has had a road named after it in recognition of the club’s contribution to looking after the environment in the area. Over the last few years, the club has planted bulbs on two roads in Otley – one of which was the by-pass – which made a contribution to Otley in Bloom.

This year, the by-pass was covered with litter so the Rotarians armed themselves with 30 black bags and held a three day litter pick. The observed that although the road is one mile long and is known as the Otley by-pass, it had no signage. So it was at that point that Rotarian Environmental Officer, Bryan Kitching had the idea of calling it Rotary Way.

An application was made to Leeds City Council, which passed it to the highways department, who in turn sent out consultations to representatives of Otley Town Council, ward councillors and highways officials. In September they agreed to a name change and the new sign was unveiled by the mayor in November, paid for by Rotarians from two Rotary clubs.

The club has also recently planted 400 trees in the locality with the help of the local scouts, further adding to their significant contribution to the environment in Otley.
