Tomorrow is World Polio Day, and to celebrate Rotary International and UNICEF will be co-hosting the third annual World Polio Day event in New York tonight at 11:30pm GMT.

The event will include a live stream, providing an update on the status of the fight against polio worldwide and will contain speeches from guests such as Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity ambassadors and polio survivors. You can access the live stream online, and take part in this unique event.

Rotary has played an instrumental part in the fight to date and Rotary Clubs across Great Britain and Ireland have continued their outstanding fundraising efforts this year, helping to add to the $1.5 billion raised worldwide so far.

The Rotary Club of Preston Guild has got into the spirit by holding their second annual Knitted Purple Pinkie Challenge. When a child is immunised against polio, their little finger is coloured with purple ink, and that symbol has become one of defiance against the disease.

The club is encouraging people to buy a knitted purple pinkie, and take pictures of themselves in the most interesting and creative locations possible. The competition has captured the imagination of people young and old, and will no doubt continue to raise vital funds for the fight against polio.

In February 2016, volunteers have the opportunity to take part in National Immunisation Day trip, with the ambition that Rotary will send its biggest humanitarian effort team ever. Anyone who is interested in taking part in National Immunisation Day should contact Mike Yates as soon as possible.
