Rotary District 1090 has been successful in gaining two Rotary International Peace Student awards.

Amardeep Kainth has been given a Rotary World Peace Scholarship to study Peace and Conflict Resolution for two years at the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan, starting next summer. Her application had the endorsement of the Rotary Club of Reading. Amardeep graduated in 2009 and, while at university, was selected as the UK representative on a unique academic programme which brings together participants from all over the world who live on board a ship and visit many countries. In 2011 she worked as a peace builder in East London, acting between the Sikh and Muslim communities.
Annie Turnbull has been given a Rotary World Peace Fellowship to take the Certificate of Professional Development (CPD) at one of the official Rotary Peace Centres, the University of Chulalongkorn in Bangkok, Thailand. Annie is, at present, the Regional Programme Operations Manager Africa for Cord, a UK-based international non-governmental organisation which works to develop local capacity to build peace in Africa and Asia. Annie has already studied at a Rotary Peace Centre, the University of Bradford, gaining an MA Hons degree with distinction in Conflict Resolution. She starts the CPD course in January. Annie was partly supported by the Rotary Club of Witney while studying at Bradford and it was Witney which endorsed her application. She has spoken to several clubs and was a speaker at the District Peace Conference last April.

Judith Diment, District Governor for D1090, said “We are very proud to support two Rotary Peace Scholars, especially as this year the global theme for Rotary is Peace Through Service. This is the first time we have received two scholarships in one year. The opportunities afforded by the Rotary Peace Scholarship programme will be life- changing for both Annie and Amardeep.”

Rotary is committed to peace the world over and offers many opportunities through educational programmes and hands-on projects to provide conflict resolution, improving health, helping communities out of poverty and many more projects.
