The Rotary Clubs in Cockermouth and Keswick have launched their own appeal for flood victims.

They say many residents are unable to get flood insurance following the 2005 floods and have set up an emergency fund to help.

"The area flooded in Keswick is the area that flooded before, so we know there are a lot of residents who are not going to be covered by insurance," said Graham Simons, Community and Vocational Committee member for the Rotary Club of Keswick.

"There are a lot of people in Keswick who have been quite badly hit, and likewise in Cockermouth although, for a lot of properties there, it’s the first time and they should be covered. But we know there are some that aren’t.

"We didn’t do this in 2005, but this time round the problem’s going to be a lot, lot more severe in terms of people getting back into their homes."

Graham is hoping that through the joint appeal, the two Rotary clubs will be able to raise enough cash to help those who may not otherwise be able to return home.

Already, hundreds of pounds have poured into the fund, and it is hoped that, when the time comes for people to return home, the money for repairs will be there.

But Graham stressed that the devastation in the two towns is such that "no matter how much we raise, it’s not going to be enough".
