It has long been a tradition in this country to celebrate Royal Jubilees by lighting beacons, whether that be on mountains, cliff tops or town and village greens.
On the evening of Thursday June 2nd there will be thousands of beacons being lit throughout the UK in celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and we want to encourage your Rotary club or district to take part.
This event will provide individuals and communities the opportunity to pay tribute to The Queen’s outstanding 70 years of service – a feat no previous monarch has ever achieved.
It’s not just in the UK where Rotarians are gearing up to take part in the Jubilee Beacons, with beacons set to be lit by Rotary groups in over 50 capital cities of Commonwealth countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, The Caribbean, Pacific and more.
There are three types of beacons that you can participate with:
- A free-standing gas fuelled beacon.
- A beacon brazier with a metal shield.
- A bonfire beacon.
Visit this website to find out more about how you can join in, the history behind the beacons, how to purchase a beacon and how to record your participation.
