Rotarians across Great Britain and Ireland are leaping into action to help the aid effort in the Horn of Africa.
Thousands of families are suffering from what is thought to be the worst drought in East Africa for six decades. Every day, people are arriving at the Dabaad refugee camp in eastern Kenya in the hope of finding food and water.
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an appeal and Rotarians are being urged to support this through fundraising activities.
Rotarian Drew Hughes, RIBI International Committee Chairman, says the situation is very serious: "This is a tragedy unfolding before our eyes. The images appearing on a daily basis are heart-breaking. 1,300 people everyday are arriving at the refugee camp, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. There are many more who have not survived the journey.
"Rotarians have already responded to this by sending 3,000 LifeStraws which can help people make use of what little water is nearby. The straws filter the bacteria out, making water safe to drink.
"Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) has experience in helping during disasters and I know Rotary clubs will be working with their communities to help raise funds for immediate aid. I ask that the public and clubs work together in this time of desperate need."
