Christmas is certainly on the way across Great Britain and Ireland, as Rotary clubs are working with communities to bring festive cheer.
Trees of light are being put on display and the ever popular Santa Sleighs are being prepared for charity collections. Clubs are also appealing to schools, community groups and the general public to support the Rotary Shoebox Scheme. Boxes are filled with items, such as toys for children, household goods and gifts for teenagers, before being sent to Eastern Europe in time for December 25th.
There were squeals of joy from schools in Scotland as youngsters filled their shoeboxes. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of several local groups and schools, this year’s Shoebox Appeal for the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane resulted in over 200 filled boxes being delivered to the central depot at Perth. These will join the 10,000 boxes, filled by clubs in the district and be dispatched to Eastern Europe in time for Christmas.
Stuart Brown, Chair of the Foundation and International Committee for District 1010, said there had been a tremendous response: "The 25th Stirling (Dunblane) Boys Brigade Junior Section, Dunblane Primary Nursery, Beaconhurst and Bridge of Allan Primary Schools as well as club members have put in a magnificent effort to fill the boxes. Many have been colourfully decorated and wrapped by the youngsters.
"These boxes bring so much joy to those who receive them. In some cases, this will be the first present they have ever received. Knowing that these gifts bring real joy is incredibly uplifting.
"My thanks to all who participated."
