Rotarians are joining HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and organisers of The Big Lunch to ask people to turn off their televisions on Sunday 1 June and chat to their neighbours for Big Lunch day. Neighbours all over Great Britain and Ireland are being encouraged to host a Big Lunch event in their communities, take time to socialise with each other and build community bonds in the process.

New research carried out by The Big Lunch – the UK’s annual get together for neighbours – found that talking with a neighbour was a lifeline for many people. The Duchess of Cornwall said: “As a proud patron of The Big Lunch, I’ve always enjoyed seeing people sharing food, having fun and simply chatting with their neighbours. After Big Lunches people are inspired to get together and help each other. Walk to school rotas, babysitting circles and cleaned up children’s playgrounds are all the result of these small beginnings.”

The Big Lunch research highlights that there is more to be done when it comes to being neighbourly with 34% of those surveyed admitting that they have got at least one neighbour they have never said hello or good morning to.
President of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), Nan McCreadie said: “Many Rotarians take part in this annual event because it is not just about having lunch together but about developing a sense of community and being there for each other. These events are humanising and an important acknowledgement of individuals who may be lonely. In taking the trouble to talk to your neighbour you may also be helping to reduce their sense of loneliness.”

The Big Lunch is expecting millions of people to take part on Sunday 1 June. For more information about holding a Big Lunch, request a free pack online at www.thebiglunch.com.
