Around 2000 delegates will be in Blackpool for the annual conference of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland to be held at the Blackpool Opera House from April 11th – 13th.
At the conference awards will be presented by Allan Jagger, President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland forOrdinary Rotarians Doing Extraordinary Things. Rotary Clubs wereasked to identify valued members in their clubs and nominate them for an award. There are five categories and the winners are:
First Award: ‘Marketing &Membership’
D1180 RC of Mawddach. Rtns Mike Craggs, Peter Nurse, Jon Swain,Dylan Williams –
Forming a new Rotary Club. In a small rural area that would normal only support one Rotary Club, a small group of Rotariansleft their previous Club and formed a vibrant new Club appealing to a different audience. The Club they left has also prospered by significantly increasing its membership.
Second Award: ‘Innovative Projects’
D1010 RC of Burntisland & Kinghorn, Rtn Bill Davidson –
"Rotary Rambles". Aware of the national problems of obesity and lack of fitness, the Rotarians in this Fife Rotary Club supported a project to provide walks programmes for all ages and abilities. Two local schools in the area now consider the walks programme an important part of their curriculum and the support from parents, grandparents and friends has been outstanding.
Third Award: ‘Working with YoungPeople’
D1180 RC of Liverpool. Rtn Graham Connolly – "Merseyside Young Singer of the Year Competition". Since 2004 the Rotary Club has organised a prestigious singing competition for young people catering for the non-pop end of the market. The competitionis judged to the same standards as would be expected in adult competition. Previous winners are already studying at major colleges. The 2004 winner received a major BBC education bursary in November 2007.
Fourth Award: ‘Volunteering’
D1100 RC of Ledbury. Rtns John Greedy, Andrew Perry, MartinPerry, Neal Farr, Ian Stobbart, Peter Fox – "CaribbeanDiabetes Footcare Project". Working in collaboration with Rotarians from Canada and in the Caribbean, a small team are helping to improve conditions for people suffering from diabetes aiming to avoid the need for amputations.
Fifth Award: ‘Working with OtherOrganisations’
D1070 RC of Blaby. Rtn Terry Watts – "Toys on theTable". A project that has been ongoing for about 25 years based around the city of Leicester. New toys are donated, collected, sorted, parcelled and labelled for deserving youngsters. The project aims to match donations with a wish list sent to the organising team. The support of local radio and newspapers is an important aspect of the project plus support from a number of local businesses.
Rotary is an organisation of business and professional persons united world-wide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help to build goodwill and peace in the world.
