Polish teenager, and RIBI Young Citizen winner, Maciej Szukala, has been given the prestigious Diana Award .

16 year old Maciej was recognised for his excellent work with young polish migrants last year when he was presented with the RIBI Young Citizens award, in association with the BBC News Channel.

He came to North Wales five years ago from Poland, unable to speak any English. This was an isolating experience and, as a result, he was bullied. To stop other migrants suffering the same problems, Maciej started teaching English to other youngsters at his school in Wrexham. He also helps refugees and migrants in the area by working with the Red Cross. He has a long list of achievements including being deputy head boy at Rhosnesni High School, Children’s Commissioner for the UN and Young Enterprise Achiever of the Year for North Wales.

His former school, Rhosnesni High, has now nominated him for the Diana Award which recognises the talents and abilities of young people who endeavour to have a positive impact on their communities.

Speaking at the RIBI Conference in Bournemouth, Maciej said his goal is to simply make a difference: "I try to help others to make their lives better. I don’t want people to sit in the corner. Use your skills and do as much as possible. Sometime people are embarrassed. I would say don’t be ashamed of what you are doing, just do it.”
