Rotary Club of Oxford Spires urges you to celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day 2015 and help find a new venue for their legendary Pooh Sticks Championships
The Rotary Club of Oxford Spires, organisers of the world famous Pooh Sticks Championships is encouraging people of all ages to celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day on Sunday 18 January 2015 and is also asking for help in finding a new home for this year’s annual event.
The championships, which has been held at Day’s Lock in Little Wittenham for 31 years, not only raises thousands of pounds for charities, but also gives people the chance to become a world champion at this unique game.
The contest has become so popular in recent years that it has outgrown the space available and the Club is now actively looking for an alternative venue in or around Oxford. Karen Eveleigh from the Rotary Club comments: “The logistics have become more difficult over the last few years as the event has become more popular and the use of the land has changed. Members of the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires and the Rotary Club of Wallingford, Sinodun & District would like to thank the residents of Little Wittenham, the staff and volunteers of the Earth Trust and the Environment Agency for their support at the Pooh Sticks Championships over the last 31 years.”
The club said the “ideal venue” would have one or two bridges over the river, access for the safety boats and space for parking as well as the registration and games tents. It is now appealing to landowners and said the event could be combined with existing village fetes or sports club open days.
Winnie the Pooh day is held in honour of the birthdate of Alan Alexander Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh, who was born on the 18th January 1882. e created the first collection of stories based on a bear that his own son, Christopher Robin, was given on his first birthday.
Oxford Spires Club members will be holding their own Winnie the Pooh party for friends, family and fellow Rotarians and the Rotary Club has come up with some suggestions for how you could celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day such as having honey on toast for breakfast, holding a Pooh tea party, dressing up as one of the characters or playing your very own game of Pooh Sticks.
Whatever you do, joining in on Sunday 18th January is the great way to honour this children’s classic and don’t forget to send in your messages and pictures to the Rotary Club of Oxford Spires at enquiries@oxfordspiresrotary.org.uk or via their social media channels.
