Power of Rotary partnership helps Ugandan township

West country Rotary clubs have joined forces to work on a broad project supporting a township community in Uganda.

Rotary clubs working together in the west of England are helping to transform a township in Uganda.

Ndwademuttwe lies about 20 kilometres outside the capital, Kampala, and is the focal point of a $70,000 Rotary matching grant project supported by Sunrise Kampala Rotary.

The project is led by Mendip Rotary, but also involves the Bridgewater and Weston Super Mare Rotary clubs, along with the District 1200 e-club. All are providing welcome financial support, as well as Cochin City Rotary in India.

Michael Gelder is Treasurer of Mendip Rotary.

He said that the ambitious three-year project includes providing a water well, refurbishing a school building, providing a library, latrines and water harvesting, as well as medical treatment centres.

Before the coronavirus outbreak, a medical camp was held at the Ndwaddemutwe School, which was attended by more than 1,000 people who were tested and treated for a wide range of conditions.

“Medical camps are being held in outlying areas, as well as in the local school, and these have been extremely busy,” explained Michael.

“Establishing medical treatment camps should lead to governmental funding when the project finishes.

It is great to hear about Rotaractors, Interactors, and Rotarians from other local clubs helping at the Rotary Camps.

“Micro-loans to help establish businesses and enable more self-sufficiency in the area have also proved successful, with many people attending training sessions.”
