Banbury Rotarian Alan Wolstencroft, has been presented with Rotary International’s highest honour for an individual Rotarian, the Service Above Self Award.

The award was made in recognition of Alan’s charitable work in Sierra Leone and South Africa. Alan first visited Sierra Leone in 2005 as a member of Rotary Mission Challenge and has returned to the country no less than seven times, supporting the local community and coordinating funding for the development of two schools. He has given over 220 talks to various groups about his work and raised over £105,000 for good causes. Alan is also a trustee of Goodwill and Growth for Africa and has visited Kwa Zulu Natal three times to work on Rotary projects.
 
The Service Above Self Award recognises 150 Rotarians around the world each year. It is presented to those who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others. It is awarded by Rotary International which has its headquarters in Evanston, Chicago, USA.

President of the Rotary Club of Banbury, Ian Rodrick commented: “Rotary is about making a difference in both local and international communities and that is exactly what Alan has done. We are delighted that he has been recognised in this way and are very proud of him.”
