Polio campaigner Mayoor Patel has had his efforts recognised in the form of a British Citizen Award.
Mayoor, pictured above right receiving his award, was added to the Roll of Honour last month in the International Achievement category as a result of his work having a significant impact on communities overseas, while at the same time, capturing the focus of people in the United Kingdom.
Mayoor and his brother Arun, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Dagenham, set up the charity Polio Children in 2003, and is one of numerous projects for which Mayoor received his Award.
The eradication of polio remains Rotary’s top humanitarian focus and the cause is one of great personal significance for the brothers, as Arun was left paralysed in his right leg having contracted polio at the age of just one.
Mayoor has visited dozens of Rotary clubs to talk about the charity’s work and the ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease.
To date, Polio Children has raised over £1.2 million and has provided hope for over 1,000 children suffering with polio. The charity helps sufferers through improving child nutrition, championing education for girls, developing vocational training facilities and supplying vital healthcare equipment such as wheelchairs and prosthetics.
