The seven Rotary clubs in Calderdale have won the prestigious Halifax Courier Community Spirit Award, Charity of the Year. The award is made annually to the organisation the judges believe has consistently delivered outstanding service to its beneficiaries, promoted and raised its profile, been clear in its goals and strategies, and demonstrated excellence all round.

Rotarians Ken Forsyth and Olwen Edwards of the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge and President Peter Lloyd of the Rotary Club of Halifax, represented Rotary at the ceremony, meeting representatives from other community spirited organisations and collecting the award.

The judges said that the award recognised not only the enormous contribution that Rotary clubs in Calderdale have made to the community over many years, but also that they are now working in various combinations on projects like the local Shoebox appeal and Calderdale Neighbours Day.

Olwen Edwards commented: "It is great to receive some recognition which is needed in order to allow interested parties to know who we are, what we do and how to engage with us. It can only help with the potential to attract new members.”
