Things were fast and fun at the weekend as disabled athletes from across England took part in the 31st English Disabled Sports Team Championships, supported by their local Rotary clubs.

The games at the Xcel Leisure Centre in Coventry involved ten teams from across the Midlands participating in a weekend of competitive activities including New Age kurling, table tennis, table-tennis for those with learning disabilities, rifle shooting, boccia team, boccia individual, darts, male weight lifting, female weight lifting, pitstop, swimming, triathlon and the slalom.

It was a closely fought contest but Team Hucknall were declared the overall winners with 245 points, with Team Leicester in second place, taking home 241 points and Team Rugby in third with a healthy score of 223 points.

Event organiser Ron Gibbs, Rotary Club of Coventry Jubilee, says the championships were a huge success: “It was an amazing weekend, the atmosphere and the energy were just incredible. Some of the team members were first timers and the confidence boost they have gained from the games is wonderful to see.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make the 31st English Disabled Sports Team Championships a roaring success. From the organisers to the audience, everyone plays a big part in making the games the major event that it is. All the competitors gave it their all and really enjoyed it which is the most important thing.

“I’d also like to again extend thanks the Lord Mayor of Coventry who officially opened the weekend and to the Xcel Centre which is home to the games.”

The English Disabled Sports Team Championships have been organised and sponsored by the five Rotary clubs in Coventry for over 30 years and are supported by clubs across England. If you would like to know more about the games, please contact your local Rotary club.
