Over 630 runners turned out to take part in the Great Black Country Run in Halesowen, raising thousands of pounds for charities and good causes. The event, which is organised by the Rotary Club of Halesowen and Rowley Regis, was the club’s second fundraising run and the biggest yet.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Halesowen and Rowley Regis acted as marshalls throughout the day, as the town centre and adjoining roads quickly became packed with hundreds of supporters.

Rotarian and race organiser, Alan Bowler said: “It was a great day and we’d like to thank everyone who took part or volunteered. The weather was perfect and it was good to see so many charity stalls. Many good causes and charities are set to benefit and we are now liaising with participants to find out how much they raised for their good causes, so that we can calculate the grand total.”

Halesowen’s European Kickboxing Champion Simon Akufo, started both the 10K and 5K races and branded the event a success. He said: “It was good to see so many families enjoying themselves and hopefully it will inspire lots of people to exercise and stay fit.”

Due to the success of the event the Rotarians have already started working towards next year’s Great Black Country Run which will be on September 21 2014.
