The Rotary Club of Horwich has presented a cheque for just under £3,000 to Derian House Hospice in Chorley. The money was raised through sponsoring athletes taking part in the annual Ironman UK triathlon in Bolton which includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run.

Derian House opened in 1993 to provide a safe haven for families whose children are facing life limiting conditions. It provides a home from home for parents, siblings, grandparents and the wider family, along with support both before and after the death of a child. The hospice cares for 300 children living in the North West and a further 200 families who receive bereavement support.

Ted Wisedale, President of the Rotary Club of Horwich said: “The hospice costs £2.9m a year to run, of which only 9% comes from the government. Further support comes from volunteers, charity shops and other organisations, so every penny counts.”

Lisa Lord, of the Derian House Hospice said: “The contribution made by local Rotarians, the Ironman UK athletes and their sponsors to our valuable work of caring is both important and appreciated. Together they make a difference.”
