The Rotary Club of Ayr has been out in force collecting money to support the work of ShelterBox in the Philippines. Over a five day period, the club collected outside their local Morrisons and church, where the collection raised £3,235 as a result of a presentation given to the congregation. In total, £6,000 was raised.

Bob Henderson, Rotary’s Shelter Box Convenor said: “I was humbled by people’s generosity, especially during these challenging economic times. The money raised will buy 10 ShelterBoxes which will be sent to help people who have had their lives devastated by the terrible events in the Philippines."

The boxes contain a tent, water purification tablets and other essential life saving items which are needed in emergency situations. Bob added that a lady who has just gone on holiday committed to donating a further £600 to the total on her return, which will enable the club to buy a total of 11 ShelterBoxes.

Since Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, the total amount raised by RIBI is currently standing at around £500,000. However, the actual amount is thought to be much higher, as RIBI has only heard from a small percentage of clubs so far.
