Bernice Yates, wife of Rotarian Mike Yates, has received one of only 100 worldwide awards granted by the President of Rotary International to spouses who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service through Rotary.

Bernice has been instrumental for many years in organising RIBI’s Indian polio immunisation groups. Mike is a member of the Rotary Club of New Mills, Marple & District and Bernice is an honorary member.

On behalf of President Sakuji Tanaka, Bernice was presented with an engraved plaque, medal and a personal letter by Rotary District Governor, Robert Strachan. It came as a complete surprise to both Bernice and Mike, not least because neither had ever heard of such an award being made to the spouse of a Rotarian.

In the letter, the RI President says that Bernice is being recognised for her contributions made through Rotary over the years, that he is truly inspired by her selfless efforts and honoured to call her a fellow member of the Rotary family.
