Rotarians are well known for taking on incredible challenges. They will abseil, do parachute jumps, run marathons and even cycle the length of the country. On their return from their heroic and daredevil exploits there is usually a warm welcome, but not for Rotarian Ken Robertshaw.
Ken, Rotary Club of Halifax, is braced for a cold awakening when raising funds for Theodora Children’s Trust by embarking on the Dog Sled Challenge. Described by one of the team leaders as the hardest way to earn sponsorship, Ken will be tested on his mental as well as physical endurance.
Travelling from Tromso, Norway, to Kiruna, Sweden, with a team of dogs and a sled through the bleak and frozen arctic landscape, Ken will be part of a team aiming to cover 250 km in six days in temperatures as low as -20C. Sleeping in tents, manhandling the equipment when the dogs need assistance, caring for the dogs and each other, the team will endure cold nights and hard working days for their chosen charity.
Although he is fulfilling a lifelong dream, Ken admits the preparations are tough: "I’m just back from a team meeting for the Dog Sled Challenge. Sounds like we are in for some serious hard work, very low temperatures, beautiful but desolate landscapes and a fantastic sense of achievement at the end. We have been promised that we will have earned every penny of sponsorship.
"I am a long time supporter or the Giggle Doctors. Having spent quite some time in hospitals over the years I know how miserable it can be, something the Giggle Doctors help to change. You can help with your donations which will not only help fund visits but will also provide specialist clothing for the characters and their props for magic tricks and the like."
You can support this one man and his many dogs on their mighty journey by checking Ken’s Facebook page and help him reach his £10,000 target.
