Peter Hamling of the Rotary Club of Lochaber and his wife Kathryn, a Macmillan Nurse, have committed to two years as volunteers helping care for hundreds of sick children and adults at the Ndi Moyo Palliative Care Centre in Malawi.

The hospital has no resident doctor, limited nursing support and such limited resources that basic bed linen is unavailable. The couple are being supported by the Rotary Club of Lochaber and the Volunteer Mission Movement.

Peter said: “Ndi Moyo is the only centre of its type in Malawi, which is one of only four countries in Sub Saharan Africa to provide any kind of palliative care to those with advanced disease. The venture is exciting and frightening at the same time, but we are committed to the two year project and will be joining the local Rotary Club of Bwaila-Lilongwe once we have settled in.”

Sheana Fraser of the Rotary Club of Lochaber said: “We are very proud of the enormous challenge and bold steps being taken by Peter and Kathryn. We will support them over the coming years and retain close links with them as well as their local Rotary club in Malawi.”
