Following the floods which recently struck the Balkans and an appeal to local Rotary clubs for assistance, the Rotary Club of Surbiton has organised the despatch of a consignment of much needed water survival boxes to Serbia.
On hearing of the disaster, Rotarian Stevan Popovich got in touch with his Serbian contacts in the Rotary Club of Belgrade, who confirmed that water purification devices were a much needed part of humanitarian aid to the displaced population in Serbia and beyond. One week later and with immense support from the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge who are involved in the Worldwaterworks project, Stevan said: “I am overwhelmed to report that we have despatched a consignment of 240 Water Survival Boxes (WSBs) to the disaster affected area which arrived on Monday.”
Rotary’s consignment of WSBs travelled on a Serbian Red Cross vehicle along with humanitarian aid provided by various NGOs and members of local communities based in the UK. When the cargo arrived the members of the Rotary Club of Belgrade-Vracar provided the necessary assistance and logistical support to the Red Cross in distributing WSBs to the areas most affected.
Stevan added: “We would be very grateful to receive donations towards further WSBs in order to help more victims of the disaster.”
