Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland is delighted to announce the three winners of this year’s Rotary Young Writer competition.
This year’s entrants were tasked to write their submissions based on the theme ‘Our World is Beautiful’, where contestants were challenged to explore what they think makes their world an attractive place.
Having progressed through local and district heats, there were 70 submissions in the final across three categories: junior for seven-10 year olds; intermediate for 11-13 year olds and the senior category for those aged 14-17. All 70 entrants were adjudicated by this year’s panel, made up of five judges, each from an education and teaching background.
This year’s victorious young writers were as follows:
The junior category winner was 9-year-old Isabella Fleming from Crosshall Junior Academy Trust. She was nominated by the Rotary Club of St. Neots St. Marys, with the judges commenting that Isabella’s story was emotive and mature for her young age, which was beautifully written with clever progression.
Ella Kyle, aged 13, from Truro High School For Girls was the winner in the intermediate category. Nominated by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen, the judges praised her thoughtful, stunning and mature précis, showing wisdom beyond her years.
14-year-old Lucy Jones, who was nominated by the Rotary Club of Knowle & District, went home with the Young Writer title in the senior category after submitting what the judges described as a beautifully descriptive story about the seasons.
Peter Davey, President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, commented: “To be able to write passionately and from the heart is a real gift, and each winner was able to tell their story in a unique way. The quality of the entries was outstanding and I’d like congratulate Isabella, Ella and Lucy on their wins.”
