Verity Swan has made history by becoming the first female District Governor of Rotary International in Ireland. Verity will be leading 2,500 Rotarians, working with Rotary clubs in their communities, partner organisations and supporting Rotary national and international initiatives.
Verity, who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Dublin North since 2001, said: “I am tremendously honoured to be Rotary in Ireland’s first ever female District Governor, which I believe is a reflection of how Rotary is moving with the times. My focus for the year will be on attracting new members, especially women and young people who are interested in volunteering.
“Research has shown that there are many people out there who would like to get involved in volunteering. So this year, we are looking at how we can work flexibly around busy lifestyles. Many clubs have already moved away from the traditional lunchtime or evening meetings and are setting up breakfast meetings and forming E-clubs instead. With 74 clubs in cities and towns throughout the island of Ireland, there are numerous ways in which people can join Rotary and get involved in the many exciting local, national and international community projects we carry out each year.”
Verity’s theme for the the year is ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things.’ The theme was inspired by her experience as a Rotary Youth Exchange leader, when she had the opportunity to learn about the culture and language of Japan.
