All the learning lines and hours of rehearsals have paid off for pupils from five schools across Great Britain and Ireland.

Talented students from Park Primary School in Bristol, Stratford Academy in London, Harris Academy in Greenwich, London, Rowdeford School in Wiltshire and Rokeby School in Kingston upon Thames were recently given the opportunity of a lifetime as they got the chance to perform in front of a distinguished audience at 11 Downing Street last month.

The event was a showcase for the Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF) the UK’s largest youth drama festival, which works with over 1,000 schools and 150 professional theatres and is supported by Rotary.

The five schools chosen gave performance extracts to an audience of supporters and potential fundraisers including the National Theatre’s director Nicholas Hytner, who gave great praise about the performances. Speeches were also made by Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Frances Osbourne and Charlotte Imbert CEO of SSF.

Donna said: “I was absolutely thrilled to represent Rotary at the event and seeing the pupils perform short extracts from their SSF abridged plays was brilliant. The young people who take part in SSF productions never cease to amaze me, their talent and growth in confidence gained from participation demonstrates how worthwhile it is for Rotary Clubs to support such a great initiative in SSF.”
