Rotarians get on their bikes for Captain Tom

Rotarians across Great Britain and Ireland have been actively fund-raising and supporting local organisations. Here is a round-up of some of that activity.

Saffron Walden Rotarian and keen cyclist Ed Netsel decided to take on the Captain Tom 100 Challenge to raise funds for the Captain Tom 100 Foundation.

April 30th would have been Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 101st birthday and the one-year anniversary of the extraordinary celebrations which raised over £38million for the NHS.

Ed Netsel and three colleagues John Eaton, Philip Marchant and Terry Wilby decided to take four cycle rides around Saffron Walden and District totalling just over 100 miles.

Ed said: “The coronavirus pandemic has caused so much uncertainty and strain for those facing loneliness and mental health issues.

“The Captain Tom Foundation will be using the activity around the 100 Challenge to support charities including The Mix, Young Minds and Place2Be which are doing great work supporting our young people’s mental health issues as we emerge from the pandemic.”

Resourceful Rotarian Robin Scott made a rod for his own back when he delivered a cheque for £5,000 to the Macmillan Hospice in Christchurch, Dorset.

Reluctant to hand over the money by hand due to COVID-19 restrictions, the President of Boscombe and Southbourne Rotary devised his own delivery method, using a giant cheque and a fishing rod.

COVID-19 ruled out the club’s traditional Tree of Light gathering last Christmas. But thanks to some technological wizardry, they were able to hold it online, raising £3,000, and the Rotarians added to the £5,000 cheque from their charity fund.


Folkestone Rotary has donated over £1,000 to buy school uniforms for families in the Kent town who have been struggling to make ends meet.

The club recently established that many families in the Folkestone area struggle to provide their children with school uniforms, as well as basic needs of shoes. coats and PE items. 

The average cost is around £30 for a primary and up to £200 for a secondary school uniform. The club works closely with family liaison officers to identify those families who need support.

Richmond Rotary in North Yorkshire was able to make the most of the easing of Government guidelines around the pandemic to stage a charity golf day.

A total of 22 teams participated including six Rotary clubs which raised £2,200 for a number of good causes including: Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Just the Job, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Colburn Lazer Cheer and Rotary’s own End Polio Now campaign.

 


Phoebe Mason was the winner of the Rotary Young Artist Competition organised by Narberth and Whitland Rotary in Pembrokeshire, along with Enzo Stephenson, winner of the Junior Young writer competition.

The Narberth School pupils are pictured with Headteacher Nia Ward, Rotarian Elaine Bradbury and Rotarian Tony Ensom receiving their winner’s certificates.

The school has been active in supporting the Rotary club’s fund-raising efforts. They supported the Sandy Bear Children’s Bereavement Charity and other causes by paying £1 to bring their furry friends to school to a teddy bears’ picnic.

Rochford Rotary in Essex has donated £300 of PE equipment to Waterman Primary School in the town.

The school really appreciates this additional help from the Rotary Club of Rochford to support our children in their PE activity.”

The Rotary club has close connections with the school and has helped with providing books for the library.

Club President, Peter Mannering visited the school to present a variety of sports equipment.
