It is Olympic year, and for many young gymnasts from the Midlands, they will be aspiring to reach the Games one day thanks to a substantial grant from Rotarians in Derbyshire.

Rotary Amber Valley, supported by Rotary across South Yorkshire and East Midlands, have helped provide additional equipment to Amber Valley Gymnastics Academy based in Ripley, Derbyshire

Rotary President Howard Doran presented a cheque for just over £1,000 to Jenny Clay, the Academy’s Performance Director.

She said: “A big thank you to Rotary for their financial support in the development our talented young people.”

The grant was made up of £500 from Amber Valley with a further £500 from District 1220 funds.

The Rotary grant will help purchase a vault run mat, spring board and vault. This will help young people from around Derbyshire and adjoining counties to progress to national and international standards.

Rotarians Howard and David Hickton saw over 100 gymnasts from pre-school to sixth forms age groups performing on mat, bar and beam to an astounding standard.

David, who is chairman of the Rotary young people’s committee, said: “Rotary, both at club and district level, have an emphasis on supporting young people.

“Seeing these young people performing and enjoying is very rewarding. I feel I have been at an Olympic Games performance!

“What a fantastic advert for how Rotary helps young people in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.”

Meanwhile, just over the border in South Yorkshire, Abbeydale Rotary, from Sheffield, have helped provide vital equipment for a special school in the city.

They also benefited from a District grant to help Mossbrook Special School’s new soft play room.

The Rotary club already enjoys a close connection with the school which caters for 130 pupils aged between four and 11-years-old who have moderate to profound communication difficulties and autism.

Some youngsters have multiple learning difficulties, but for a number of years, Abbeydale Rotary has helped with maintaining the school’s sensory garden.

Jo said the new room and equipment was a wonderful and essential addition for the school.
