Rotary in West Midlands celebrate their centenary

Rotary clubs from across Great Britain and Ireland have been hard at work fundraising and celebrating their centenaries.

The Rotary Club of Kidderminster in Worcestershire certainly welcomed a wonderful turnout to its 100th-anniversary celebrations.

Over 100 guests enjoyed a formal dinner with entertainment by the comedian, Alfie Moore of Radio Four’s “a Fair Cop”.

The event was supported by Rotary District Governor and Assistant District Governors, Presidents, and Rotarians from Lincoln, Birmingham, Bewdley, Evesham, Hagley, Stourbridge, Stourport, Kinver, and Worcester; as well as The Alcester Bretvins.

President Paul outlined a brief history of the Club and its many varied projects that the club has supported both internationally and locally.

The club has been instrumental in forming three other local clubs; Stourport-on-Severn in 1963, Hagley in 1978 and Bewdley in 1990.

Over the years many projects have received help from Kidderminster Rotary Club, from the annual sponsored walk, annual community service awards to local children and much more.

Borderland Rotary in West Midlands hosted Macmillan Cancer Coffee Mornings at Oswestry Street market on Friday and was blown away by the response of the people of Oswestry.

The coffee was made by Lynda Jones from Llynclys Farm in her little hospitality van and the magnificent range of cakes was provided by Sean Evans from Sweeney Hall Hotel.

Harry Richardson, who set up the stand and coordinated the event commented on the success of the morning.

He said: “It all started very well, and it was quite sunny but funnily enough, as the weather got worse, the takings went up and I was really impressed by the generosity of all the people that stopped for a chat as the rain poured down.

“We’ve been doing the coffee morning for some years now, apart from Covid of course, but we’ve never taken so much money and I’m so grateful to everyone that gave so freely in these difficult times, and I’d like to thank Lynda and Sean for making it possible.”

The coffee morning made just over £650 and was a huge success for the club.”

Sean, from the Sweeney Hotel, said, “I always look forward to doing this event as it’s a chance for me to give something back.

“Also, to get out and meet everyone and I’m obviously thrilled to see that people seem to enjoy the cakes we make at the hotel, long may it continue.”

One of the volunteers, Mike Isherwood, said: “We are so grateful for this donation and somewhat relieved as our funds were getting very low and although the public has been incredibly generous in both word and deed, we do need hard cash now and again.”
