Rotary International announces virtual convention this summer

With the global pandemic putting paid to the planned Rotary International convention in Taipei this summer, organisers are turning online.

Last June, Rotary held its first virtual convention, which met with great success. This followed the cancellation of the planned Rotary International convention in Hawaii – which has since been confirmed at the host in 2027.

For seven days, more than 60,000 attendees listened to a variety of keynote speakers, and at least 75,000 visitors watched one or more of the general sessions that were broadcast live on YouTube in eight languages.

The roster of breakout sessions was dramatically expanded, with events held into July.

And in the second half of June, when the convention took place, nearly $1 million was donated to The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary adapted and, by doing so, found a way to engage more members than ever.

In January, the Rotary International Board of Directors made the difficult but prudent decision to convert the 2021 Rotary International Convention to a virtual event.

The 2021 Virtual Rotary International Convention, scheduled for June 12th to 16th, will open opportunities for Rotary members who might not have been able to attend an in-person event.

“As an organisation that is at the forefront of eradicating polio and other preventable diseases, we have clear responsibilities in mitigating the threat of COVID-19,” said Rotary International General Secretary, John Hewko.

This decision was reached in response to the ongoing crisis, but Rotary is committed to using this change as an opportunity.

The virtual experience is being crafted to offer new ways for participants to engage with Rotary members from around the world.

Wherever you are, in June you can be a part of the Virtual Rotary International Convention.
