Rotary supports disability sports showcase in Wales

It’s thanks to Rotary stepping in 11 years ago to save a popular disability sports showcase from being scrapped that Disability Sport Wales’ ‘Insport’ series is thriving today.

Rotarians in south Wales gave their support to Disability Sport Wales’ ‘Insport’ series, which showcases 28 disability sports.

This annual event is held at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.

The aim of this two-day, free event is to ensure that sport is accessible to people, especially children, of all abilities by encouraging them to try out something new and discover talent which they didn’t know they had.

The real pleasure for us is seeing the smiling faces of the children and showing that there are no limitations to what they can achieve and the enjoyment which participating in sport can give.”

Friday was reserved for schools and clubs when this huge arena became filled with the noise and excitement generated by 750 children.

Saturday was for families, allowing more time with the coaches to learn more about individual events.

The Insport event provides accessible sporting activities for people, especially children, in the area.

Cardiff Bay Rotarian Phil Steele has been the link with Insport from the start.

He explained that Rotary became involved in 2008 following the withdrawal of a key sponsor. Cardiff Bay Rotary stepped in to help with funding and ensure that the event could go ahead.

“We’ve maintained that partnership every year since,” said Phil.

“The real pleasure for us is seeing the smiling faces of the children and showing that there are no limitations to what they can achieve and the enjoyment which participating in sport can give.”

Creating opportunities and unlocking potential.
