Rotary is pleased to announce that after 33 years of organising the Rotary English Disabled Sports Team Championships in Coventry, the project has been awarded a grant by the Big Lottery Fund.

The championships are organised by the five Rotary Clubs of Coventry and take place each year at the Xcel Leisure Centre in Coventry, which has been designed to meet the needs of all members of the community. The event is also supported by a large number of other Rotary clubs in the area who sponsor the individual events, along with local businesses and the Coventry Sports Foundation.

This year’s event takes place on 1 and 2 November with teams taking part from Rotary districts covering Heart of England, East Midlands, Three Counties and the West Country, Derbyshire and Nottingham, Essex and Humberside.

Chairman of the Trustees, Peter Offer said: “We are delighted with this award of £4,500. Each year the organising committee chaired by Ron Gibbs has to raise around ten thousand pounds to stage the event which includes the hire of the centre and equipment, lunches on Saturday and Sunday and evening meal and entertainment on Saturday. In addition Rotary districts raise the money to transport their team and provide them with accommodation.”

Chairman Ron Gibbs added: “This grant will give us the opportunity to add a few thrills to the event especially on Saturday evening. It will enable us to continue to put on an event of sporting achievement and continue our team championships which encourage those who are disabled to participate in sport.”
