Intrepid Rotarian Ken Robertshaw of the Rotary Club of Halifax and former Rotary Youth Leadership Award participant Grace Alsanck have reached Memphis Tennessee in their mammoth kayak down the entire length of the Mississippi river.

The pair are raising money for the Theodora Children’s Trust, a charity which provides specially trained entertainers to hospitals to ease the misery of children who are in hospital. They began their 2,350 mile journey in August and expect to reach their destination on 4 October.

Arriving in Memphis Ken said: “We started out with a target of covering around 50 miles a day and have made good progress, even managing to pass a former Olympic rower who set off two weeks before us. Today we covered a mammoth 61.4 miles, a record so far and in the last three days we have covered more miles than we did in the entire first week, such is the change in the river flow.”

Ken and Grace now have just over 500 miles to go and have already received pledges of support from Rotarians in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area. Ken added: “Every £5 we raise will mean another visit to a child in hospital from a Giggle Doctor. If every Rotary club in Great Britain and Ireland donated £50 that would raise over £90,000.”

You can sponsor Ken and Grace, make a donation or track their progress, or alternatively text KRGA60 5 to 70070 to donate £5.
