Surrey Rotary clubs unite for Ukrainian picnic

Several Rotary clubs in the region collaborated to put on a day of fun in honour of Ukraine Independence Day.

Surrey locals and Ukrainians came together for a picnic organised by Rotary to mark Ukraine Independence Day 2023.

The Rotary clubs of Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Leatherhead collaborated with Jo Sherring from the Epsom & Ewell Refugee Network to organise the event.

The picnic was held at Ashtead Football Club and plenty of Rotary volunteers turned up early to help set up the gazebos and stands.

There was plenty to do for everyone attending with the event hosting entertainers, games, crafts, a Punch & Judy show and a kite that flew at 300 feet.

The Epsom & Ewell Refugee Network thanked the Rotary clubs for arranging the picnic and Jo Sherring added that the day succeeded at making Ukrainian families feel welcome in the local community.

A Ukrainian guest attending the event commented: “Being able to come together with a group of other Ukrainians to enjoy food and drinks whilst the children were being entertained made for such a special day.  It reminded me of being at home and the type of gatherings we would have there.”
