Rotarian’s life on an ocean wave features in new book

Keen sailor and Rotarian, Ian Macpherson, has just had his sailing memoirs published ‘A Scotsman’s Odyssey’.

Ian is a Past President of Barrhead Rotary in East Renfrewshire, and he has been using his time wisely during COVID-19 to tie up publication of the book, which is published by The Conrad Press.

A Scotsman’s Odyssey is an account of four decades of sea adventures and exploration written, says his publisher, so vividly that you can feel the salt spray in your face.

Ian’s maritime chronicle is a varied piece of work based across the globe. It charts a love of sailing which took him to out-of-the-way places ranging from the sub-Arctic Faroes Islands to the remote Barrier Reef islands in tropical Australia.

“A Scotsman’s Odyssey is a book as much about voyaging in the imagination as on the waves,” said Ian.

“It inspires cruising yachtsmen and yachtswomen to sail beyond their native shores, young readers to seize opportunities to sail on Ocean Youth Trust voyages, armchair sailors to journey to northern Europe and ancient Venetian ports in Greece and Croatia.”

The book covers Ian’s encounters with basking sharks, dolphins, killer and humpbacked whales, and even salt-water crocodiles.

Ian Macpherson was a headteacher for 22 years at Barrhead and Eastwood High Schools.

An active Rotarian, he led a Rotary group study exchange to Namibia and South Africa, and is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

As the Scottish Area Governor of the Ocean Youth Trust, he had responsibility for the building and commissioning of their new ketch Alba Venturer.

Now aged 83, ‘A Scotsman’s Odyssey’ was published earlier this summer and is now on sale at booksellers and on Amazon.
